With the different states, provinces, and countries all introducing new legalization laws, there’s been a new and renewed interest in marijuana. For those new to the sticky substance, what once seemed to be a part of an underground subculture is now out in the open—and it’s great. But if you’re new, it can seem a little overwhelming, because marijuana is so much more than just lighting up a joint.

See, there’s a science behind weed. There’s an art to it, too. Here, we’ll answer everything you’ve been dying to ask—but didn’t know where to start.

What’s the difference between an indica and a sativa?

You’ve heard about indica, you’ve heard about sativa. Marijuana is often organized into two of these traditional categories because they have different effects. Indica strains create “body highs,” whereas sativa produces cerebral effects. But most weed on the market these days are products of cross-breeding, so they’re never really “pure” sativa or “pure” indica.

Cross-breeding has also yielded strains of marijuana that are much more potent, making today’s weed much stronger than what it used to be back in the day.

What’s THC?

Marijuana is comprised of two main chemicals: THC and CBD.

THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the psychoactive compound and it’s what’s associated with giving you the high. How it does this is by mimicking anandamine, a natural chemical that your brain produces, and alters the function in neural communication. (It sounds intense, but it’s really not. Just know: it gets you high.)

THC can affect memory, pleasure, thinking, concentration, and coordination. So, you know, don’t operate heavy machinery or drive. Just take it easy. With that said, a number of studies have shown that THC holds some health benefits in treating such things as PTSD, depression, and epilepsy.

And CBD?

Moving on to CBD. CBD, or cannabidiol, is the non-psychoactive (or less, at least) component of marijuana. You’ve probably noticed this, but more and more health stores now carry CBD products because many use it for pain, anxiety, inflammation, and more, without the neural effects that THC provides.

CBD and THC work together to give you the perfect high. The higher the level of CBD, of course, the lesser the effect of THC. Think about it this way: if THC is all “go go go,” then CBD is the thing going, “hey, take it easy.” This is why the ratio of THC to CBD is important, depending on how you want to feel.  

What should I use to smoke it?

The short of the long of this is that when it comes down to it, it’s how you want to smoke it!

Joints are obviously the most popular and easiest method. They’re easy to roll and cost next to nothing, though you can now purchase pre-rolled joints at dispensaries, which is particularly convenient for those who don’t have their joint-rolling technique down. Bongs, pipes, and vaporizers cost a little bit more, though vaporizers are better at masking the odor.

How do I make edibles?

It’s so much easier than you think! The most important step is to ensure that you have converted the THC acid in your marijuana into plain THC. This is done to ensure that you’re applying the correct amount of heat for the correct amount of time.

What if I smoke too much?

Look, it happens to all of us. Every smoker has a story about that time they got waaaaay too high, and while these stories are always fun told in retrospect, it’s not all that enjoyable to green out. (“Greening out” is when you get sick from smoking… because you know, you turn green when you’re nauseous. Some even vomit.) Edibles are particularly tricky, which is why you should wait a bit and see how you feel before you go for another hit or another bite; it can take up to four hours for the effects to be felt in some people.

If you get too high or start to green out, lie down for a second, drink something sweet, and smell something strong. It may seem like an old wives’ tale, but lemons and cloves produce strong scents that can wake you up.  

Obviously, if you’re past the point of saving, you may need medical help. Let’s not go there, shall we?

Is it legal where I live?

Well, this is kind of your responsibility to find this out, as it really varies from state to state, province to province, and country to country.
